What is Ghost?

Ghost is the world's most popular modern publishing platform for creating a new media platform.

What is Ghost?

Ghost is a free and open-source blogging platform written in JavaScript and distributed under the MIT License, designed to simplify the process of online publishing for individual bloggers and online publications.

Ghost is a full headless content management system (CMS) which is completely agnostic of any particular front end or static site framework.

Ghost is the world's most popular modern publishing platform for creating a new media platform. Used by Apple, SkyNews, Buffer, OpenAI, and thousands more.

A few things you should know about Ghost

  1. Ghost's target audience is ambitious, professional publishers who actively want to build a business around their content. That's who it works best! That is the reason why we are using it.
  2. Ghost can be modified and customized to suit your needs. It's mighty but does require some knowledge of code. Ghost is not necessarily a good platform for beginners or people who want a simple personal blog as it's more technical than other blog platforms such as WordPress.
  3. It's possible to work with all your favorite tools and apps with hundreds of integrations to speed up your workflows, connect email lists, build communities, and much more.

Behind the scenes

An independent non-profit organization called the Ghost Foundation created what we know as Ghost. Like other open-source projects like Discourse, which we also use as our forum platform, Ghost is 100% self-funded by revenue from its Ghost(Pro) service. Every penny they make is re-invested into funding further development of free, open-source technology for modern publishing.

The version of Ghost you are looking at right now would not have been made possible without generous contributions from the open-source community.

Next up, the editor

The main thing you'll want to read about next is probably: the Ghost editor. The editor is where the good stuff happens. Simplicity is beautiful!

Here is a pro tip for new Ghost sites that we think it's worth mentioning:
