As a content creator, I need excellent-quality videos and images. I don't want to buy stock footage and photos, as they get expensive quickly and are not original. After about two years of hesitating, I finally decided on a camera.

I waited almost two years before purchasing the Sony Alpha 7S III. The two main reasons for not buying sooner were availability and price. Most of the time, when I look for this camera, it is out of stock. And if I did find one, it would be well above the MSRP—classic supply and demand.

Since I could not find one online, I searched eBay and Facebook Marketplace. I found a great used camera, but ultimately bought a brand-new one. I searched Amazon Renewed for a discounted camera since I have always been looking for great deals on Amazon Renewed. On December 12, 2022, I managed to snag a refurbished one for $2,799.95. With taxes, I paid $3,030.95. I saved $613.05, or 17% of the original price of $3,498.00. Not bad. If you check now, it's under $3K!

The Lens

I am not rich, but I wish I were. Knowing that lenses are the most expensive part of photography and videography, I wanted a versatile lens mainly for vistas. The Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM Wide-Angle Zoom Lens (SEL1635GM) is a staple for landscape photographers worldwide. It's wide enough to capture incredible epic scenes and expansive views—it's perfect!

The lens has these features:

What's my next lens? Sony E-mount FE 24mm F1.4 GM Full Frame Wide-angle Prime Lens (SEL24F14GM). I need an excellent general-purpose lens, and I think the FE 24mm F1.4 GM is perfect for that role since it's a prime lens with a fast and sharp focus.

I am also considering purchasing the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD for Sony Mirrorless Full. I hear it is an excellent lens for vlogging.

I am protecting my investment using the SmallRig Camera Cage 2999 for Sony A7S III. It fits like a glove and will protect my camera in case of a mishap!

The Bag: Manfrotto Advanced Camera and Laptop Backpack Tri M

I like this Manfrotto camera backpack because it can be used in three ways. Depending on your preferences, you can use it as a sling bag, a standard backpack, or even in the ''X" position.

This bag design lets you easily hold a DSLR or CSC with an attached 24-70/2.8, three lenses, and a flash. With the bag in ''X'' or sling mode, you can easily swing it to one side for easy access to your gear during those all-important moments on a shoot. The backpack has two compartments. The bottom half is dedicated to your photography gear and contains additional padding for security, while the top is for personal items. The bag has a dedicated pocket for media cards and a compartment to store a 10'' tablet. Two additional external zippered pockets provide a means by which you can bring some personal items along on a shoot, and the clever frontal tripod straps allow for a small tripod to be attached to the bag. The bag also includes a rain protector for those shooting in inclement weather.

I abandoned my W-2 career a year ago and became a 1099 contractor. There are many reasons why I chose to stop working for W-2A and become a 1099 worker, but I won't discuss those reasons in this article. Instead but, I will tell you about the wonderful world of independent contractors.

Who Is a 1099 Worker or Independent Contractor?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, doctors, dentists, veterinarians, lawyers, accountants, contractors, subcontractors, public stenographers, or auctioneers in an independent trade, business, or profession where they offer their services to the general public are generally independent contractors. In other words, you are self-employed if you are an independent contractor.

Whether these people are independent contractors or employees depends on the facts in each case. The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if the payer/client has the right to control or direct only the result of the work and not how the individual or business will accomplish the job.

Here are some things to consider when working as an independent contractor: 

Autonomy and Flexibility

Working as an independent contractor can be a good fit for people who enjoy autonomy and flexibility and are comfortable managing their finances and taxes. 

Independent contractors are self-employed individuals who work with clients on a temporary or contracted basis rather than as direct employees. As such, you can set your expectations and timelines. If the client agrees with the terms, you can do the job at your own pace without having the client nagging you. Give yourself plenty of "cushion time" in case something happens. The best part, in my opinion, is that you know your worth and, therefore, what to charge your clients.

Taxes

Independent contractors are responsible for paying their taxes, including self-employment tax, a combination of Medicare and Social Security taxes.

I use a third-party payroll company to manage my paycheck and taxes.

Protections

Independent contractors may not have the same legal protections as full-time employees. For example, they may face more challenges in disputes with clients or companies over late payments, contract breaches, or disagreements.

I have a few protections in place. It is essential to have things in writing and adhere to the agreed work and timelines to avoid delays or misunderstandings.

Management

Independent contractors manage their time and finances, including tracking income and expenses, paying for insurance, and making retirement contributions.

Again, I use a third-party company to track my income and expenses. I also save all the physical maintenance invoices and receipts.

There is something about managing your time and finances that makes it so rewarding! It feels good knowing that all your hard work and effort pays off.

Communication

Independent contractors often spend much time interacting with clients and other professionals to ensure that projects are on track.

I mainly communicate via text messages or email and through a phone call if it is an emergency. By the way, I have two cell phones with two different carriers. As an independent contractor, you need to be reachable.

Training

Suppose you are in any of the professions mentioned earlier in this article. In that case, you don't need any specialized training to be an independent contractor, but you may need a business license, depending on your area and specialty.

For example, I have DOT HM-181 HazMat Training and TSA TWIC credentials, which allow me to work in ports, airports, and military/government installations. TWIC, or Transportation Worker Identification Credential, is a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and United States Coast Guard initiative. These certifications allow me to access a wider clientele as an over-the-road expedited. However, they are not necessary to do what I do.

For those who don't know, "Veteran" and "Combat Veteran" refer to distinct categories based on military service and experiences. Here are the differences:

Veteran

A Veteran has served in the military, typically for a significant period, and completed their military service under conditions other than dishonorable.

This term encompasses a wide range of military service, including those who served in combat and support roles or even non-combat roles. Essentially, any person who has completed their service commitment and received a discharge under honorable conditions is considered a Veteran.

Combat Veteran

A Combat Veteran specifically refers to a person deployed to a designated combat zone during their military service.

This designation is for individuals directly engaged in ground combat or hostile fire and other conditions inherent to combat situations.

Combat Veterans often receive additional recognition or benefits due to the nature of their service in combat zones.

Summary

All Combat Veterans are Veterans, but not all Veterans are Combat Veterans. The distinction lies in whether the individual has served in combat zones or engaged in direct combat operations during their military career. These terms don't take away from their military service or military accomplishments.

Nicholas "Nick" Arace
According to family and friends, Arace loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and hiker. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Yankees, and NASCAR. His favorite NASCAR driver was Dale Earnhardt Jr. He was an all-around good guy with many friends and a good friend of fellow infantryman Sergei Hearst (listed below).

Sadly, PFC Arace lost his battle on December 1, 2013. He was only 26 years old.

Jeremy L. Brown
At barely 20 years old, Brown died during combat on May 9, 2010, serving during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He served with the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Brown was from McMinnville, Tennessee.

Even though Brown was not in our unit at the time of his death, we felt his loss as if he were. Once a Polar Bear, always a Polar Bear!

Vincent "Vinny" DeFrank
DeFrank was an Infantryman and a Combat Veteran. He was from Livonia, Michigan. DeFrank continued his selfless service after his military time as a volunteer firefighter. He killed himself on October 24, 2015.

Mike "Mickey" Gerez
Gerez was a combat veteran and an avid hunter who loved fishing. He was an Infantryman and SSG stationed in Fort Benning, GA. He passed away in 2023 from a self-inflicted wound. Gerez was 37 years old at the time of his death.

Sergei Hearst
Hearst was a Combat Veteran, Infantryman, and Sergeant from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. He killed himself on June 13, 2014.

George "Geo" J. Mackulin IV
Mackulin IV, 30, of Jefferson Hills, committed suicide on Monday, October 12, 2015. He was an Army Infantryman Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion Post 712 in Pleasant Hills, PA, and the Floreffe Volunteer Fire Company.

Matthew "Mully" Mullinax
Mullinax joined the United States Army and faithfully served his country as an infantryman for four years. His passion in life was music, and having taught himself to play the guitar, he was always known as a well-established guitarist. Mullinax overdosed in 2020. He was 34 years old.

Jacob Raymond
Raymond was a former infantryman reclassified to another MOS due to an injury he suffered during Ranger School. Eventually, the Army medically discharged him due to said injury. Sadly, in 2015, 30-year-old Raymond killed himself.

Final Thoughts

I served with these Infantrymen while stationed in Fort Drum, NY. All of them were Combat Veterans and struggled with PTSD.

I understand that talking about PTSD and suicide can be challenging. However, it is essential to recognize that although national tracking of veteran suicide rates is unreliable at best, the VA estimates that 22 veterans commit suicide each day. That means approximately 8,030 veterans kill themselves every year. That's wild!

Nearly everyone in this post died of suicide. Jeremy L. Brown was the only one killed in action, and Mullinax died of a drug overdose.

These Veterans selflessly served our country. They return with scars that most people wouldn't understand. Never forget that!

The Resident Evil Outbreak series, known in Japan as Biohazard Outbreak, is a spinoff of the Resident Evil series consisting of two survival horror games developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 2.

Capcom released Outbreak in 2003 and File #2 in 2004, respectively. These titles are important because they marked a departure from the traditional Resident Evil formula by introducing online multiplayer gameplay, allowing up to four players to cooperate in escaping scenarios filled with zombies and other bio-organic weapons (BOWs) in and around the fictional city of Raccoon City.

Resident Evil Outbreak (2003)

Setting and Story:

The first game is set in the fictional Raccoon City, concurrent with the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Players control one of eight characters, each with unique abilities and backgrounds, navigating through various scenarios to escape the city amidst the viral outbreak.

The narrative is episodic, with each scenario presenting different challenges and puzzles. The goal is to survive and find a way out while uncovering more about Umbrella Corporation's involvement in the outbreak.

Gameplay:

Unlike previous Resident Evil games, Outbreak emphasizes teamwork and decision-making.

Players can choose characters with different skill sets (e.g., medical proficiency, lockpicking) to complement each other and progress through scenarios.

Each scenario has multiple endings based on player decisions and outcomes, adding replayability.

The game introduced a real-time inventory management system where items take up physical space, and characters can only carry a limited amount.

Online Features:

Resident Evil Outbreak was notable for being one of the first console games to support online multiplayer on the PlayStation 2. Players could connect via the Internet to play cooperatively, strategizing and communicating to survive.

Offline single-player was also an option, with AI-controlled partners. However, you need to partner with "compatible" characters (some of them don't get along with you!). The offline single-player mode is the only official option now, as Capcom shut down the online servers long ago.

Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 (2004)

Setting and Story:

The sequel continues the story in Raccoon City, expanding upon the first game's events. It introduces new characters alongside returning ones from the first title, each with unique abilities and backstories.

File #2 explores new locations and scenarios within the city, providing deeper insights into the outbreak and its consequences.

Gameplay:

Building upon the foundation of the first game, File #2 retains the cooperative multiplayer focus and episodic scenario structure.

New gameplay mechanics and scenarios were introduced, such as dynamic NPC interactions and complex puzzles. Walk-and-shoot mechanics were a welcome addition to the game.

Online Features:

Like its predecessor, File #2 supports online multiplayer for up to four players. It improved network stability and added new features to enhance the cooperative experience.

Legacy and Reception

The Outbreak series was praised for its innovative multiplayer approach in a survival horror context, offering a unique blend of cooperative gameplay and traditional Resident Evil elements.

However, it received mixed reviews due to technical limitations, such as camera angles and AI behavior, and the challenging nature of coordinating with human or AI partners.

Despite its cult following and the potential for future installments, the series was discontinued after File #2, possibly due to the declining popularity of the PlayStation 2 and the logistical challenges of online gaming at the time. File #2 didn't sell as many copies as the first game.

Final Thoughts

In summary, Resident Evil Outbreak and its sequel, File #2, represent an experimental phase for the Resident Evil franchise, exploring multiplayer dynamics within the survival horror genre. Fans like me fondly remember them for their cooperative gameplay mechanics and contributions to the series' lore, although they remain relatively niche entries in the broader Resident Evil universe. Former President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt Saturday afternoon at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, just days before he was to accept the Republican nomination for a third time.

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Sadly, an attendee lost her life, and two others were gravely wounded. The good news is that the piece of shit shooter got his head riddled with rounds to the dome by the sniper detail. I don't know how they didn't spot the shooter before he shot at Trump, but at least he didn't kill him, and it didn't become a mass casualty incident. It could've been a lot worse! Thankfully, it wasn't.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that our Frenchie, Odin, passed away yesterday. His death was sudden, and he appeared not to have suffered.

Odin turned four years old last month. He was extremely healthy, according to the veterinarian. He was always playful and could jump incredibly high! 🥺

Days Gone is an action-adventure survival horror game developed by Bend Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 in April 2019 and features an open-world, post-apocalyptic version of the Pacific Northwest.

Plot:

The game's narrative follows Deacon St. John, a US Army Combat Veteran, and former 1%er outlaw turned drifter and bounty hunter. He navigates a world ravaged by a global pandemic that infected and transformed most of humanity into zombie-like creatures known as Freakers. Deacon is searching for answers about the fate of his wife, Sarah, who may still be alive in the dangerous wilderness.

Setting:

The game's open-world environment is one of its standout features. The Pacific Northwest is depicted in stunning detail, featuring diverse landscapes such as dense forests, abandoned towns, highways, and snowy mountain regions. The dynamic weather and day-night cycle contribute to the immersive experience.

Sometimes, I walk around and explore the environment. It truly feels alive!

Gameplay:

Days Gone combines third-person action, stealth, and survival elements. Players control Deacon as he navigates the open world on his motorcycle, a crucial aspect of the game for exploration, combat, and evasion. The bike requires maintenance, fuel, and upgrades, adding a layer of realism and strategic planning.

The Freakers are the primary antagonists; their behavior changes depending on the time of day and weather conditions. Hordes of Freakers can be massive and present a significant challenge, requiring careful planning and resource management. Do not engage a horde if you're not prepared to face them!

Freakers are humans infected with the "Freaker Virus." Yeah, not a very clever name, but it is what it is. As stated above, they are the antagonistic force and catalyst for events in Days Gone. There are many types of Freakers. I won't go on to list them as I think you should play the game and find out their attributes on your own. Oh, and there are also infected animals as well. The Days Gone world is alive and trying to kill you! Much like Australia, am I right?

Uninfected humans can sometimes be more dangerous than the Freakers. There are different human factions. Some of them are survivors, and some of them are raiders, and even worse, some of them are cultists trying to kill you. You can use the environment in your favor to deal with the bad guys. You can lure a Freaker swarm or horde to them. You can also have a Rager Bear or cougar chase you into an enemy camp to help dispose of the baddies and save ammo and resources.

The game incorporates a dynamic weather system that affects gameplay and the behavior of the Freakers. Rain can make surfaces slippery, affecting motorcycle handling, while snow slows movement. The day-night cycle also influences the types and behavior of enemies. Just like in real life, daytime makes things easier. The game's landscape looks beautiful both day and night.

Survival aspects include scavenging for resources, crafting items, and managing inventory. Players must also be mindful of their health, stamina, ammunition, and motorcycle condition. Maintaining their bikes is mandatory!

Storytelling:

Days Gone's narrative is not just a story; it's an immersive experience that unfolds through main story missions, side quests, and environmental storytelling.

Deacon's character development through interactions with other survivors and exploring themes of loss, hope, and survival will keep you engaged throughout the game. By the way, Writer/Director John Garvin wrote the Days Gone story and the story for 1999's Syphon Filter, one of my favorite games of all time. Respect! 🫡

Technical Aspects:

Days Gone is a visual and auditory treat showcasing the technical prowess of the PlayStation 4. The game features detailed character models, realistic environments, and remarkable weather effects. The sound design adds to the immersive experience with dynamic audio that responds to the environment and situational changes, leaving you impressed with the game's technical aspects.

Reception:

Upon its release, the game garnered mixed reviews. While many critics praised its engaging open world, dynamic weather, and tense encounters with Freaker hordes, some pointed out technical issues, pacing problems, and a derivative storyline as drawbacks. However, it's important to note that the game has a dedicated fan base and subsequent updates have addressed some of these initial concerns.

Most critics didn't play the game and jumped on the hate bandwagon. Directors John Garvin, Jeff Ross, and Bend Studio created something special with Days Gone. Days Gone deserves more love than it got!

Days Gone is a must-play video game. I played it on a PS4 Pro, and it looked amazing. I also bought Days Gone on Steam, which looks even better!

You'll love this game, especially if you are familiar with Oregon and the breathtaking Pacific Northwest. You can tell John Garvin, Jeff Ross, and everyone who worked on this game poured their hearts and souls into making it a masterpiece, which it is. I wish Bend Studio could expand the Days Gone world by creating a DLC, a prequel, or a sequel. Sadly, that is wishful thinking, as the creative team who brought us this underrated masterpiece is long gone.

People must develop effective self-defense strategies, such as carrying the appropriate weapons to survive an attack to combat crime. With fewer police officers on the streets and longer reaction times, citizens must be able to defend themselves.

Crime is Rising

The crime of robbery is a growing threat, and according to FBI Uniform Crime Reports, robberies were at the rate of one per minute in the United States last year. While 15% of robberies occur at home, about 42% happen on the street or in a parking lot and are strong-arm robberies. Other crimes that put a person's health and safety into question -- assault, battery, menacing, etc. -- can also be a threat when you're out and about.

With this crime growing more prevalent, it's a good idea to consider ways to protect yourself, specifically the best non-lethal weapons you might carry for self-defense. Here are a few that are simple, effective, and legal for you to have and that might save your property or your life:

Pepper Spray

If you could only carry one self-defense item, it must be pepper spray. This product is legal in all 50 states, with only a few size and concentration restrictions. The main ingredient is capsaicin, derived from red chili peppers and strong enough to repel an attacking grizzly bear. When you spray an attacker in the eyes, they usually collapse and are stunned for 20 to 30 minutes; however, the effects are generally short-lived with no permanent damage.

Pepper spray can be purchased for less than $10, making it cost-effective. It's simple to use and requires no training—just point-and-shoot. One of its best features is its small size. The product is small and discreet, making it easy to carry anywhere; some units are small enough to be held on a key chain.

I recommend the SABRE Crossfire Pepper Gel. I used the SABRE RED MK-3 CROSSFIRE GEL as a police officer and a Sheriff's Deputy, and I know that stuff works when used correctly. Yes, SABRE RED MK-3 CROSSFIRE GEL is the SABRE Crossfire Pepper Gel, but it is the closest you can get as a civilian, especially for the budget.

Stun Guns

A stun gun is an electrifying weapon that delivers a powerful shock that incapacitates an attacker when it touches them. The product is simple to use: Touch the metal prongs on the front of the unit to any part of the attacker's body, and a powerful current of electricity is released, effectively stunning the attacker and stopping them for up to 10 minutes.

These self-defense weapons are widely used and come in a variety of styles. Some stun guns double as lipstick cases, flashlights, and cell phones. These small and compact weapons make them ideal for carrying in pockets and bags. You can purchase a "good" disguised stun gun for as little as $25. I recommend one that works as a flashlight.

Stun guns are legal in most states but not in Hawaii or Rhode Island. All states have laws governing the use of firearms, but stun guns are not considered firearms and are not subject to the same regulations. However, most states classify them as dangerous weapons and have laws governing how they can be carried and used. If you want to take a stun gun, talk to the police about the local laws.

One disadvantage of this weapon is that you must touch it to the attacker's body to use it, whereas you can shoot the pepper spray from up to 10 feet away and still be effective. Another thing to keep in mind is that you must fully charge stun guns to function.

Self-Defense Umbrellas?

These specially designed and reinforced umbrellas serve as effective self-defense weapons in a pinch. They are made of high-strength plastic, fiberglass, and carbon fiber, making them light (about 2 pounds) but solid and durable enough to knock down an attacker. You can swing an umbrella like a cane or bat and use it to block blows. This weapon is handy for people who live in cities where it rains a lot.

In most cases, these umbrellas are incredibly well-made and, as a result, quite expensive; a good one will cost around $125. Experimenting with your new umbrella to understand its balance and weight is a good idea. These umbrellas usually have detailed instructions on using the weapon to swing and strike.

Most states allow defense umbrellas made of plastic, fiberglass, or carbon fiber. Steel ones are typically not legal, nor are those with a blade at the umbrella tip. Before making a purchase, check with the manufacturer to see if they meet these requirements for being street-legal.

Citizens must rely on their means of self-defense as crime continues to rise. These three weapons, pepper spray, stun guns, and self-defense umbrellas, are excellent choices because they are non-lethal, practical, portable, and legal in most states. Armed with these weapons, you'll have the confidence and ability to handle any situation.

I recommend the Security Umbrella. It will be your most expensive umbrella!

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is still often mistaken for a mental health condition that only affects military veterans or people who have lived in war zones. There is also a growing understanding that sexual and physical abuse can lead to PTSD. When that abuse is in childhood, victims can bury it deep within, and it can manifest as complex PTSD.

Often overlooked, it is all the other causes of PTSD can lead to many thousands of cases going undiagnosed and untreated. That means countless people suffer in silence without knowing why they struggle in their relationships, careers, and daily lives.

PTSD comes from trauma, but what is trauma?

The word trauma can cover a wide range of events and experiences, including single or sustained occurrences. It is a situation in which we feel frightened, stressed, or shocked, often related to feeling that you or someone else is in danger.

That is more common than you may realize. Experts believe that 60-70% of people experience a significant trauma in their lives.

Your likelihood increases according to your job role. Some careers will be more likely to put you in contact with traumatic situations, such as police officers and frontline healthcare staff. However, there are less apparent careers that leave you vulnerable to PTSD, too. The perfect example is train drivers. Statistically, they are likely to see at least one suicide during their career.

Whatever your job role, age, or social circumstances, you could one day face a traumatic situation. For example, being in or witnessing a road accident, witnessing a suicide (whether that is someone you know or not), sudden death, being in a fire or explosion, seeing or being the victim of a violent crime, and being bullied, harassed, or stalked.

Trauma response varies

The above is not a complete list, as one of the most problematic things about diagnosing PTSD is defining what constitutes a trauma with the potential to leave a lasting impression.

Much depends on what each person finds most unsettling and frightening!

For example, two people can see the same violent and distressing event, and only one of them could go on to develop serious mental health issues. That does not invalidate that person's PTSD and is not a sign they are the weaker of the two. Solid and resilient people can and do develop post-traumatic stress disorder.

PTSD and the human brain

Another of the abiding myths about PTSD is that it is something you can 'throw off' or move away from if you focus on positive things and don't dwell on the trauma you experienced. You can ignore it if you want to, but in many cases, sustainable recovery comes from tackling the changes that happened to your brain.

PTDS is not a superficial set of emotions and behaviors. It is a form of 'damage' that trauma can do to brain chemistry.

The part of the brain that deals with something frightening, shocking, and distressing is called the hippocampus, which is at the base of your brain and plays a crucial role in storing and retrieving memories.

Sometimes, a memory gets attached to feelings of intense fear or anger. When this is powerful or stressful enough, it can alter the hippocampus in some people, making it less active and less effective at sorting memories according to logical principles.

Imagine if this happens to you. Your emotions and responses are tangled and hard to process, and as a result, you misbehave or are out of proportion to the situation. You can't switch that off because someone told you to or you want to return to normal. You need help to 'rewire' and strengthen your memory associations and responses.

Global research is underway to understand this process better. If medical science were able to scan and measure hippocampus activity, it would be possible to predict PTSD and measure recovery.

That's not the only way PTSD can change your brain chemistry, either.

Our bodies have automatic responses to traumatic situations. We go into 'alarm mode,' producing hormones that trigger physical activities designed to protect us, like moving away from danger.

You may know the instincts known as "fight, flight, or freeze ." They don't need explanations of how they help us cope with perceived dangers. There is another one, too, which is 'fawn'. That is when you plead or bargain with someone or behave submissively and use flattery to alleviate them and diffuse the risk.

This instant alarm and response system saves our lives in some instances. Then, new hormones automatically switch us back to our usual composure and rational thinking.

However, trauma can trigger such an excessive 'alarm' response that switching it back off becomes a challenge. The person feels constantly alert and hypervigilant to risk and responds to even the mildest situations with an urge to run, hit out, shut down, or bargain.

PTSD Symptoms

When you consider the way trauma can alter brain chemistry, it is easy to see the root of many PTSD symptoms. For instance, people with post-traumatic stress disorder can become emotionally withdrawn as part of their 'freeze' instinct. They can also be quick to anger and 'lash out' as their 'fight' instinct switches on inappropriately.

Other ways PTSD manifests include poor sleep due to hypervigilance and a brain that's hard to 'switch off,' as well as flashbacks and nightmares as the hippocampus struggles to rationalize a trauma memory.

Other symptoms of PTSD include constantly feeling anxious, poor concentration, irritability, and a heightened sense of guilt.

Your behavior may seem illogical, too, as you avoid any triggers that remind you of the emotional impact of the trauma. That can mean even intense, joyous, pleasurable experiences may be too overwhelming, and avoiding social contact as much as possible becomes easier.

Is PTSD curable?

Though trauma affects different people in different ways, and individual experiences of PTSD can differ considerably, help is available to achieve sustainable recovery. What that help 'looks like' can also vary. Some people only need short-term therapy, while others require a package of help using a blend of treatments.

The most important thing is to accept that no one case of PTSD is more valid than another. If trauma has changed you, then please seek help as you deserve it.

When It's Time to Quit Your Job

Careers make up a large portion of our lives, and our jobs are often a source of stress or anxiety. Temporary projects, working shorthandedly, or facing new unrealistic goals and expectations can make for times when your job could be more enjoyable or rewarding. While this is part of life, how do you know when the stresses are more than temporary? Often, they are not.

Sometimes, it's best to cut ties sooner rather than later. This article explores the signs that your job-related fatigue and stress are more than temporary setbacks. When a job negatively impacts other areas of your life, it can be best to start looking elsewhere. Below are a few examples that may call for handing in that two-week notice.

1. Your Job Is All You Think About

Having some work-related anxiety or stress on a Sunday night before a big workweek or during high-pressure times of the year is one thing. It's another thing entirely if you begin dreading work the second you leave. If your Monday-Friday job fills you with anxiety the second you wake up on Saturday morning, it becomes unhealthy. Weekends and time away are essential for mental health. If your dislike for your work is bleeding into your time, it may be best to look elsewhere.

Similarly, suppose you become preoccupied with dreading the next day, every night after work. In that case, your career is damaging your mental health. In short, if the negative emotions created by your work are perpetual rather than temporary, it's time to leave.

2. The Workplace Is Toxic

To be clear, having a petty dispute with a coworker or two is not toxic. A toxic environment is one of pervasive, unavoidable misery. It may consist of open hostility from or between upper management or constant human resources issues and litigation. A culture of insubordination and apathy may exist unilaterally across all lower-level employees. Many quit without notice or openly discuss doing so. There may be substance abuse issues during the workday.

The odds of rising above an environment like this and succeeding are slim. The odds are far more significant that you will get dragged down by, or into, such an environment yourself. Save the time and heartache and begin searching for alternative employment.

3. You've Stagnated

It would help to achieve a middle or upper-level position where you're comfortable maintaining mobility. Sure, there will be times when you must learn your current role and prove your worth before moving up. That's perfectly acceptable. Another matter is staying in a position where you need to be more personal or financially satisfied.

Suppose you've been doing solid work in the same position for many years without a significant raise or promotion. In that case, it may be worth asking why. Is your company's structure one in which you're unlikely to move up due to people clinging to higher positions, or are you outright taken for granted? Either way, address whether you could reasonably do better elsewhere. With most people working for 40 or so years in their professional lives, spending ten years in one position is the equivalent of a quarter of your career. Move on before you're stuck.

4. Your Field Is Becoming Irrelevant

Changing times sometimes cause ripple effects in our economy. While never pleasant to deal with, it always helps to address reality. Suppose your industry or field is losing market share or fading away entirely. In that case, there is no reward for being the last one standing. Telephone operators, newspaper printers, and radio maintenance specialists can offer some advice in this regard.

Look at industries that require similar skills and make the jump sooner rather than later. If your talent is highly specialized, this may be easier. Try any educational courses offered by your current employer or try to transfer departments to get exposure to different areas of expertise. If you're close to retirement age, it may be possible to hang on for a few more years, but if you're middle-aged or younger, don't close your eyes and hope for the best. It can hurt you in the long run.

5. Burnout

Although not a medical condition, the APA Dictionary of Psychology defines burnout as "physical, emotional or mental exhaustion, accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance and negative attitudes towards oneself and others."

Is quitting going to fix burnout? Maybe. Sometimes, you need to reset mentally and physically. Take an extended vacation from work. Give yourself some time for yourself. Spend time with the family. Go on a family vacation, perhaps. Then, assess your work situation. You have burnout if you return to work and feel physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion. It is best to consider quitting.

Take a break from the monotonousness of your current job. If, after your vacation, you still feel burned out, then consider leaving that job. Before doing that, however, I recommend you have substantial savings and alternative employment.

Conclusions

These are just a few of the most significant signs it's time for a change. The accumulation of many smaller items can also result in an unhealthy situation. While ultimately up to the individual in each case, it can be easy to ignore your surroundings while focusing on your daily responsibilities. Taking a step back and coming to an honest self-assessment about yourself and your career can save time, money, and heartache in the future. If any of the above signs apply to your job, do yourself a favor and start looking elsewhere today.

Sometimes, even chronic pain sufferers believe in these false ideas. But everyone should know that the following six big myths about chronic pain are inaccurate.

Chronic pain is overblown.

The idea that chronic pain sufferers make mountains out of molehills, or even that the pain is all in their heads, is a very destructive myth. While a small number of hypochondriacs do exist, genuine chronic pain patients are much more common. Many conditions can cause chronic pain, and living with chronic pain is always a significant challenge.

It's best to tough it out.

It would be nice if the principle of mind over matter worked in the real world. Chronic pain, however, cannot be overcome with mere willpower. Ignoring pain is never wise. Consulting with a medical professional is a must. Luckily, various treatments for chronic pain are available, from physical therapy (PT) to meditation. Painkillers are particularly valuable in dealing with chronic pain.

Painkillers completely solve the problem.

On the other hand, as valuable as painkillers can be, they do not entirely numb pain. Generally, chronic pain sufferers use pain medicine to reduce their symptoms to a tolerable level, allowing them to go about their everyday lives. Painkillers often have unpleasant side effects and may be addictive, so their use should generally be limited.

Chronic pain is a natural part of aging.

Minor aches, pains, and injuries may become more likely as the body ages. However, chronic pain is never inevitable and is not a natural result of normal aging. Severe injuries and health conditions cause chronic pain. This fact causes hope. While the effects of aging are inescapable and can only be slowed down, chronic pain can often be entirely reversed.

Exercise makes chronic pain worse.

While consulting with a medical professional about specific workouts is always wise, as a general rule, exercise will mitigate chronic pain symptoms rather than exacerbate them. The body is made to be moved. Training is crucial to improving health. For many kinds of chronic pain, exercise is indispensable to recovery and management. Working out builds strength and is particularly helpful for joint pain. In my case, physical training was not practical for my particular injury. However, it is still important as I can work out other areas of my body.

Regular exercise leads to higher circulating levels of dopamine and more available dopamine receptors, which can relieve depression and expand one's capacity for joy. Always follow your doctor's advice and exercise recommendations.

Chronic pain makes it impossible to function.

Millions of chronic pain patients live meaningful, fulfilling lives despite their condition. While chronic pain is never a good thing, it doesn't mean someone is incapable of having a great career, caring for loved ones, or otherwise living a rich life. Chronic pain does not necessitate that an individual is bedridden or isolated.

Chronic pain myths are pernicious.

By clouding the understanding of what chronic pain entails, these myths harm patients and non-sufferers. The average person must have a better experience of chronic pain.

Final thoughts.

I suffer from chronic pain, and I wrote about these six myths because I have experienced them. I had doctors tell me it's all in my head; I had family think I am joking when I tell them my wrist hurts; co-workers think I am "scamming" the system; people tell me pain is a sign I am getting old. It takes a toll on you. It takes a toll on me as it makes me question myself. Do I go back to work even if I am in pain? If I return to work, will I be able to perform as a worker?
